Moissanite is a rare mineral that was discovered in 1893 by Dr. Henri Moissan, a French chemist who later when on to win a Nobel Prize. After studying rock samples from a meteorite, he discovered tiny particles he believed were remnants of a diamond. It wasn’t until 1904 that he identified these crystals of being Silicon Carbide. The mineral formed would later be named after him.
Natural Moissanite is incredibly rare, so moissanite available today is laboratory created. Moissanite is engineered to give the illusion of a diamond, but is compositionally and visually different than a diamond. Their durability, brilliance, and colour define each mineral in their own distinct way.
Benefits of Moissanite include: Eco-friendly with minimal environmental impact, Moissanite is less expensive per carat than any other gemstones, durable with a MOHS hardness of 9.25, compared at a diamond which has a hardness of 10, and that is suitable for everyday use.
